About SS-31

SS-31, also known as elamipretide, is a four–amino-acid peptide designed to concentrate at the inner mitochondrial membrane, where it associates with cardiolipin. It is a widely used research tool in mitochondrial and cellular-energetics studies and is supplied here as a lyophilized 10-vial kit.

How SS-31 works

SS-31 (elamipretide) is a four–amino-acid, cell-permeable peptide built on an alternating aromatic–cationic motif. That motif lets it cross membranes without a transporter and concentrate at the inner mitochondrial membrane.

Once there, published work describes it associating with cardiolipin, the signature phospholipid of that membrane. Because the target is a structural lipid rather than a receptor, the literature uses it as a tool for probing mitochondrial membrane integrity and bioenergetics.

What the research shows

A 2025 review in International Journal of Molecular Sciences covers its structure and proposed mechanism; a 2019 study in Journal of Neuroinflammation is representative of the preclinical mitochondrial-dysfunction work.
