How Semax works

Semax is a synthetic heptapeptide: the ACTH(4–10) fragment extended at the C-terminus with Pro-Gly-Pro. That tripeptide tail is the whole point — it slows enzymatic breakdown, so the molecule survives long enough to be studied.

It is built from the fragment of ACTH that lacks the region required for corticotropic activity, so the literature treats it as a neuropeptide rather than a hormone analogue. Reported effects centre on BDNF and neurotrophin expression.

What the research shows

A 2016 paper in Journal of Inorganic Biochemistry examines how N-terminal acetylation changes the molecule; a 2020 study applies a functional-connectomic approach to Semax and Selank together.

Semax was developed in Russia and most of its literature is Russian-language or Russian-authored. It is not approved in the EU or the US.
